AI marketplaces are exploding. That's great for choice. It's terrible for decision-making.
When every agent promises to "save time" and "boost productivity," how do you know which ones are actually worth installing? The answer isn't downloading five agents and hoping one works.
It's asking the right questions before you click Adopt. Here's the framework we use.
1. Does It Actually Do Something?
The first question is the most important. Many AI products are really just chatbots with a different interface. A good AI agent doesn't just answer questions. It executes work.
Look for agents that can actually perform tasks, such as:
Send emails
Update spreadsheets or CRM records
Generate reports
Monitor competitors
Schedule meetings
Organize files
Run automatically on a schedule
If it still depends on you doing all the work, it's probably not much of an agent.
2. Is It Solving Your Problem?
People don't wake up wanting an AI agent. They wake up wanting work off their plate. Don't search for "the best AI agent." Search for the outcome you want:
"Summarize my inbox every morning."
"Generate a weekly competitor report."
"Share meeting notes with my team."
"Update my CRM after sales calls."
The best agent isn't the one with the most features. It's the one that consistently solves a problem you have every day.
3. Do You Understand What Happens After You Click Run?
A good agent should have a clear workflow. You should be able to explain what it does in one sentence.
For example: Reads new Gmail messages, summarizes important emails, drafts responses, and sends me a morning digest.
If the workflow isn't clear before you adopt it, don't expect it to become clearer after you do.
4. Does It Fit Into Your Existing Workflow?
The best agent should operate in isolation. It should work with the tools you already use. Before adopting an agent, check:
Which apps does it connect to?
Does it require Gmail, Slack, Google Drive, Microsoft 365, Salesforce, or another platform?
Will you actually use those integrations?
The less you have to change your workflow, the faster you'll see value.
5. What Will It Cost After You Install It?
"Free" doesn't always mean free. Before adopting an agent, understand:
Is there a one-time purchase?
Is there a cost every time it runs?
Does it rely on premium AI models that increase usage costs?
Clear pricing upfront means fewer surprises later.
6. Can You Trust It to Run Without You?
This is a question most people never ask. Imagine scheduling the agent to run every morning while you're asleep. Would you trust the results? If your answer is "probably not," don't automate it yet.
Instead:
Test it with a real task.
Review the output.
Run it a few more times.
Then automate it with confidence.
Great agents earn your trust before they earn your automation.
7. Who Built It?
Behind every AI agent is a builder. Take a minute to review their profile. Look for things like:
Other published agents
Published tools or functions
Total runs
Ratings or reviews
Recent updates
A strong track record doesn't guarantee success, but it does provide confidence that the agent is actively maintained and improving over time.
A 30-Second Evaluation Checklist
Before you adopt any AI agent, run through this quick scorecard.
Question | ✅ Good Sign | 🚩 Red Flag |
Does the outcome make sense immediately? | "Creates a weekly competitor report." | "Uses AI to improve productivity." |
Does it work with my tools? | Gmail, Slack, Salesforce, Google Drive | Requires apps you don't use |
Is the workflow obvious? | Clear step-by-step explanation | Vague description |
Can I test it first? | Yes | No preview or test |
Is pricing transparent? | Clear purchase and run costs | Hidden usage fees |
Does the builder have experience? | Published agents and successful runs | No history or updates |
If you can confidently answer "yes" to most of these questions, you've probably found an agent worth trying.
What Great Agents Have in Common
AI agents are built equal. The best ones share a few characteristics.
Average Agent | Great Agent |
Answers prompts | Executes work |
Generic | Built for a specific job |
Requires constant prompting | Runs with minimal supervision |
Makes suggestions | Produces outcomes |
Saves a few minutes | Becomes part of your workflow |
The goal isn't to find the smartest AI. It's to find the most effective one. The one you'll stop thinking about because it quietly gets the job done.
TL;DR
Before adopting an AI agent, ask seven questions:
Does it execute work or just chat?
Does it solve my specific problem?
Do I understand what happens after I click Run?
Does it work with the tools I already use?
Is the pricing clear?
Can I trust it to run without supervision?
Is it built by someone with a proven track record?
The best AI agent isn't the one with the longest feature list. It's the one that fits seamlessly into your workflow and saves you time every single week.
